I imagine that many people including myself only think about the planned or suggested colour for any decorating project when it is getting near the time that they actually wish to purchase paint. However it is just as important to decide which type of paint should be used and for which surface etc and the final finish that is required needs to be carefully considered.

I will attempt to set out some of the various options that are available and usually work well in most average settings.

Various Types of Paint:

It’s been talked about over and over how colors can influence the way we feel and act. Because of this many people try to choose a room color that will have a positive effect (in their opinion) on the people dwelling inside. Often times this just leads to frustration and ultimately can ruin an otherwise fun DIY project.

Let’s face it, painting your home’s interior can be a fun and easy way to transform the look of your home. Why complicate it? When choosing a color you shouldn’t necessarily worry too much about whether Red means “Passion” or Green equals “Nature & Outdoors”… you’re not doing a science experiment, you’re repainting your interior!

When it comes to home improvements, few projects provide the combination of low cost and high value that a fresh coat of paint can provide. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that painting the house, both the exterior and the interior, is one of the few home improvement projects that can actually pay for itself. The money you put into buying paints and supplies can more than pay for itself in increased home value, not to mention the psychological value such an improvement can bring to yourself and your family.

According to the EPA indoor air is considered to be one of the top five hazards to human health.
Studies found that levels of several Volatile Organic Compounds average 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases that are emitted from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which have adverse health effects. VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products including: paints, lacquers, cleaning supplies, paint strippers, correction fluids, carbonless copy paper, graphics and craft materials, glues and adhesives, permanent markers, photographic solutions, pesticides, building materials and furnishings and office equipment such as copiers and printers

Fall is the perfect time of year for painting, both indoors and outdoors. Temperatures are falling, the sun is not as harsh, and the humidity index is down. If painting indoors, windows can be opened to provide good ventilation. If painting outdoors, the climate is right to provide proper drying and adhesion of paints.

The proper surface preparation for any painting project is to remove any paint that is flaking and provide a reasonably clean surface. For a first coat, the use of a paint primer or specifically formulated undercoat paint is generally the best method to ensure that the final or decorative coat has proper adhesion to the surface that you are painting.
