Calculating the amount of concrete you require for your project can be a very confusing exercise.

Pre-mix concrete comes in 60 lb. and 80 lb. Bags. A 60 lb. bag provides 0.45 cubic feet of cured concrete and an 80 lb. bag provides 0.6 cubic feet of cured concrete.

If you have mixed concrete delivered, it is sold by the yard (which is a cubic yard = 27 cubic feet).

Following are the formulas to calculate how much concrete you will require for a square or rectangular shaped pour:

A Concrete Alien At The Beach

Posted by admin under Home Improvement

I arrived at the beach today at around noon. When I arrived there was a crowd of 20 or so people gathered at the picnic area. This is a nice wooded area with 6 o r 7 concrete picnic tables and a small playground for children.

The crowd was gathered around a tree looking up and pointing. Up in the tree about 20 feet off the ground was an Alien! It was a silver color with a long neck and a big green head. It had huge black eyes that seemed to be looking down at the crowd. It seemed to be suspended there as if its parachute had gotten snagged in the branches.

Installation Of Paving Stones

Posted by admin under Home Improvement

Because the installation of concrete paving stones is a complex and time consuming procedure many do it yourselfers do not invest in the effort to do the job right – the first time. If proper installation is not followed, the pavers will heave in some spots, settle in others and spread out producing an unsightly outcome.

The following information is intended as an overview to the proper installation of concrete paving bricks. These are the steps that would be taken by a reputable contractor who would be providing a guarantee on the work done.

Creative Concrete Stamping

Posted by admin under Home Improvement

Stamping concrete is a great way for you to imitate the look and fee of authentic stone, brick, or pavement without having to spend as much. There are rubber patterns that create the impression of natural stone for this purpose. There are also ready-made patterns for such materials such as brick and cobblestone, however sometimes they can look artificial. One way to avoid this is to create your own patterns to be used in stamping concrete. If you can learn this you will soon find your inventory stock filled with varied patters that can be used for your various concrete stamping projects.

The use of Bricks or Pavers to create a walkway or patio complements a home in a way that is unmatched. It adds a level of quality and elegance to a home entrance that can not be achieved with either concrete or asphalt. Brick and Pavers also come in many different colors and shapes allowing for unique color schemes and patterns to be achieved. In addition, installing a Brick or Paver walkway does not necessarily require a pro. With some basic knowledge and a relatively simple walkway plan, a homeowner is capable of undertaking such a project.

Faux Finish Concrete Staining

Posted by admin under Home Improvement

Are you tired of looking at plain dull concrete around your home? Have you seen beautifully colored concrete and wondered how it’s done? It’s not difficult and can be done by the average do-it-yourselfer.

Concrete staining is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to decorate new and existing concrete surfaces. Staining can transform your concrete surface into a stunning and unique masterpiece with little cost compared to other decorative methods such as stamping. Concrete staining is excellent for patios, porches, driveways and even interior floors like kitchens and basements.

A lot of people (myself included) are a little lazy when it comes to mixing their concrete/hypertufa/etc. This generally results in a poor mix that will not cure properly.

I found an easy solution to this when I was looking around for an easy to make mixer. I was staying in a hotel and there was some construction work going on next door.

They where not using concrete, plaster or hypertufa. The where mixing stucco. I was walking through the parking lot and as I passed the machine that they where using I glanced into it. There was not much mortar left and I could see the mixing mechanism.

Concrete is the most widely used manmade product in the world. It powers a $35 billion industry, one of the largest on Earth. Concrete is used to make a variety of structures a which you use everyday.

Concrete is a construction material that consists of, in its most common form, cement, gravel and sand, and water. Concrete is the most highly used manmade product on Earth. It is used to make pavements, building structures, foundations, motorways/roads, overpasses, parking structures, brick/block walls and
footings for gates, fences and poles. Approximately six billion cubic metres of concrete are produced every year, which is one cubic metre per person on Earth! Concrete commands a $35 billion worldwide industry and employs, in the United States alone, 2 million people.

Sub-grade:

As with many home improvement construction projects, what you don’t see is more important to the finished project than what you do see. The preparation of the sub-grade when pouring a concrete driveway is critical, without it, the life of the driveway will be decreased dramatically.

Slab-on-grade foundations are concrete slabs poured directly on the ground with no space between the ground and the concrete. This most often occurs in areas where the ground is not subject to freezing and therefore not likely to heave. There are derivations of this where frost underneath the structure is controlled with foam insulation or hydronic (hot-water) heating systems incorporated into the slab to prevent the ground below from freezing. However, it is usually not typically economically favorable to use the slab-on-grade in very cold climates. There is at type called a Frost protected Slab that is standard in Sweden and is gaining acceptance here.
