The microwave was hailed as the greatest revolution in cookery since the invention of electricity, but ignorance and over promotion by greedy manufacturers caused an ever sceptical public to stop trying to use them for more than warming already prepared foods and liquids. The sad part of this is that your microwave can be used in so many ways to produce great foods in a fraction of the time of a conventional oven and with very little mess. Advances in technology and years of experimentation by dedicated microwave cooks have lead to there being a great number of beneficial uses for microwaves whilst cooking.
Chicken and fish can be cooked quickly and will retain both flavor and moisture, but red meats unless finished under a grill or in a pan will still not color. The great thing is though that if you are using your barbecue you can start your steaks off in the microwave and finish them off on the barbecue. This can stop you producing charcoal black food and speed up the process of barbecuing. This idea can be used with most foods you barbecue saving time and you can produce food that looks great and make you look like your the barbecue king.
Vegetables will maintain more nutrients and flavor if cooked quickly so popping veg in the microwave with a cup of water will steam them perfectly and because the microwave does not discolor them they look great and fresh when served. Anything that needs to be stirred is great for microwave cooking, but remember to use a splatter screen or microwave safe wrap.
Baking is not a great idea for microwave ovens but proving dough for bread can be sped up if a cup of water in the microwave and run it on low. Making peanut brittle is easy in your microwave as it is great controlled place for melting sugar and can get the temperature without burning the sugar.
Simple things can be done very quickly with a microwave it is just a matter of trying. The cooks who have persevered with their microwaves are to be saluted for their innovation and tenacity.
